Islamic banking?  Australia says “yes” and now has its very first licensed Islamic bank, the Islamic Bank of Australia (“IBA”).  Consistent with Sharia law, IBA will offer retail and business banking services that do not charge interest.  Australia’s eagerness to become involved in the Islamic finance sector is reminiscent of the efforts taken by China in response to the 2008 global financial crisis.  Since 2008, China has been exploring how Islamic finance might play a role in stabilizing the global financial system.

What can we learn from Islamic finance?  Is Islamic finance a trend happening around the world?
