Construction of the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan Railway Formally Begins

In late July 2022, after their talks in Cholpon-Ata in Kyrgyzstan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of China WANG Yi and Foreign Affairs Minister of Kyrgyzstan Jeenbek Kulubaev announced that the first group of Chinese railway experts had begun their survey work in Kyrgyzstan, a step marking the beginning of the construction process of the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway.

This announcement comes only a few months after the 1,000 km-long China–Laos Railway began its operations. The China–Laos Railway gives landlocked Laos the unprecedented opportunity to become a hub for economic activity. Will the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway offer Kyrgyzstan and its neighboring countries similar opportunities?
