Cross-Border Use of Digital Yuan Contributes to Financial Inclusion†
Digest | 文摘
The mBridge project, a financial inclusion project featuring the cross-border use of central bank digital currencies (e.g., the digital yuan), has made impressive progress. Jointly built by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) Innovation Hub Hong Kong Centre, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, the Bank of Thailand, the Digital Currency Institute of the People’s Bank of China, and the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates, mBridge was tested by 20 banks in these four jurisdictions from August 15 to September 23, 2022. During the test, 164 cross-border remittance and foreign currency exchange transactions with a total value of approximately USD 22 million were successfully completed.
By offering to all interested jurisdictions—especially those that lack access to traditional payment mechanisms—an efficient and low-cost payment solution rooted in the use of cross-border central bank digital currencies, mBridge helps foster greater financial inclusion in international payments. Cecilia Skingsley, Head of the BIS Innovation Hub Hong Kong Centre, succinctly said, “financial exclusion is not just a problem for individuals; it is also affecting economies”.
Following the successful implementation of this pilot project, what are the next steps for mBridge’s development? What useful experiences (e.g., in testing the domestic use of its digital currency, providing related mobile payment services, and setting legal standards) can China share with other countries?
